You probably already know that adoption usually comes with a hefty price tag.

Of course, to those of us adopting, it’s like those MasterCard commercials –priceless– but the reality is that building a family this way is expensive, especially for ordinary, middle-class folks like us.

The type of adoption we’re doing is called an independent international adoption. Because we already know the daughter we hope to adopt, we don’t need to use a placement agency, and this is saving us thousands of dollars. Thankfully, we have great resources who all recommend the same ethical, Christian lawyer in Uganda to assist us with the legalities there. And the pastor of the orphanage is working with his local friends to find us economical, safe accommodations and cut corners however we can while we are in-country.

That said, while international adoptions can cost upwards of $30,000, we’ve estimated our budget for everything to be around $12,000. (This includes airfare, legal fees, other travel expenses, etc.) We have been actively fundraising through various means, such hosting a silent auction, having a garage sale, through sales made on our Just Love Coffee storefront, and by selling donated items here on our site.

We are still praying for approval by one or more ministries that offer matching-funds, grants or interest-free covenant loan programs. As of January 2013, we’ve been approved to partner with an orphan care ministry who can issue tax receipts to those making larger donations. If you’d like information on how to do this, please let me know.

In the meantime, as you can see by the site’s thermometer, we’re accepting donations through PayPal and WePay. (Please understand that we’re not able to offer a tax receipt for PayPal or WePay contributions.)

We understand that adoption isn’t for everyone, but all of us have something to give to help one child in need. Even if it’s just a few dollars, it all adds up to making life better for this beautiful little girl, and we thank you sincerely for any help you are able to give!
